The body communicates in sensations, not words

I have always emphasized the importance of the body in psychotherapy. Our bodies carry our life experiences for better or worse. Overwhelming or traumatic experiences leave traces in the body and nervous system. Our living, breathing, pulsating body is the very foundation of who we are, from the purely physical and biological, to the more refined energetic body. When our senses are numbed, we no longer feel alive. However, we learn little about somatic awareness. In my practice, I focus on directing attention to what is felt and sensed in the body – what is experienced right now, in addition to the words or the story. The story belongs to the past, and can be important to understand, but it is the body and the emotions that carry it into the present and into the future. The body has a deep intelligence, so both our cognitive intelligence and the body's intelligence must be involved for real healing to occur, allowing us to become whole.
